🤟 Celebrating Sign Language: A Skill Worth Learning Anytime
The International Day of Sign Languages was recognized on Tuesday, September 23rd, but the value of learning sign language extends far beyond a single day. This rich and expressive language connects communities, promotes inclusion, and breaks down communication barriers.
Why It Matters:
Sign language is more than just hand movements; it allows millions of people who are Deaf or hard of hearing to communicate, learn, and share their voices. By knowing even a few simple signs, families can help foster understanding and inclusivity in everyday life.
A Personal Note:
In my own family, I taught my children sign language as babies, and it saved me a great deal of time and headache. Instead of crying to communicate, they could sign what they needed, which brought peace and understanding into our home. Growing up, I was first introduced to sign language at my local church, and later, I deepened my knowledge when I became a teacher in the public schools. Two of my students were nonverbal, and sign language became a bridge that allowed us to truly connect and communicate. Those experiences showed me just how powerful and life-changing sign language can be.
